Understanding the rules of a round

In Texas Hold'em, the most popular version of poker, each player receives two private cards — known as "hole cards". The dealer then reveals five community cards on the table. These five cards are opened in three stages: first three together (the flop), then one (the turn), and finally one more (the river).

A betting round takes place after each card is revealed. Players combine their two cards with the five on the table to make the best possible five-card hand. After all cards are revealed, the player with the strongest hand — or the one who has made everyone else fold — takes the entire pot.

Each round begins with posting the small blind and big blind — these mandatory bets put initial money into the pot and keep the game moving. The dealer button moves clockwise after each hand, so every position gets a turn.

Hand type Example Strength
Royal Flush A K Q J 10 (same suit) Highest
Straight Flush 7 8 9 10 J (same suit) Very Strong
Four of a Kind Four Ks Strong
Full House Three Js + Two 9s Good
Flush Any five of the same suit Medium
Straight 4 5 6 7 8 (any suit) Medium
Three of a Kind Three 7s Average
High Card No combination Lowest

Bet types in poker and what they mean

Every betting action sends a message. Choosing the right bet at the right time is the core skill in poker.

Check

Continuing the hand without putting in any extra money. However, you cannot check if someone has already bet before you.

Free Action

Call

Putting in the same amount as the previous player's bet. It is the simplest way to stay in the hand — call only when the profit math is in your favour.

Match Bet

Raise

Putting in more than the previous bet. Used to show a strong hand or put pressure on opponents.

Apply Pressure

Fold

Giving up your hand and forfeiting any claim to the pot. Folding a weak hand is the best way to limit losses.

Give Up Hand

All-In

Putting all your chips into the pot at once. Once your bankroll is gone you cannot participate in side pots, but you remain eligible for the main pot.

Maximum Bet

Bluff

Making a large bet with a weak hand to make opponents fold. A successful bluff is one of the most striking moments in poker.

Psychological

How the house edge works in poker

In most casino games the house maintains a fixed mathematical advantage. Poker works a little differently — especially in Texas Hold'em and Omaha, where you play against other players rather than against the casino.

In these poker variants the casino takes a rake — a small percentage of each pot or a fixed time fee. As a result, everyone receives slightly less from the overall pot over time. However, skilled players can consistently profit against weaker opponents — this is what separates poker from pure luck-based games like slots.

In casino poker variants such as Three-Card Poker or Caribbean Stud, the player plays directly against the dealer. Here the house edge depends on the game rules and pay table, and typically falls within a few percent. Using the best strategy can keep that edge low.

At baji Casino's live poker tables, the rake structure is transparent — you can find out before you start playing.

Practical strategies for beginners

You cannot become an expert at poker in a single day, but a few core principles can help you avoid big mistakes from the start.

  • Be selective with your hands. You do not need to play every hand. Start with two high cards or a pocket pair — weak starting hands lose most of the time.
  • Be aware of position. Sitting to the right of the dealer (late position) means you act after others have made their decisions — that is a big advantage. The same hand that you might fold in early position can be called or raised in late position.
  • Keep bluffing to a minimum. Beginners often bluff too much. Random bluffs against experienced opponents are easy to read. Make your decisions based on the actual strength of your hand instead.
  • Understand pot odds. Before calling, work out whether your chances of winning are good enough relative to the size of the pot. This simple calculation helps you make the right decisions over the long run.
  • Control your emotions. The urge to make large bets to recover losses after a bad hand — known as "tilt" — is the most costly habit in poker. Treat each hand as a separate event.
  • Manage your bankroll. Sit at a table with only a small portion of your total bankroll. That way one bad session cannot wipe everything out. Follow the responsible gaming guidelines.

A list of good starting hands

In Texas Hold'em, these hole cards are generally considered playable:

AA (Pocket Aces) KK (Pocket Kings) QQ (Pocket Queens) JJ (Pocket Jacks) AK (Suited) AQ (Suited) TT (Pocket Tens) AK (Offsuit) 99 (Pocket Nines) AJ (Suited) KQ (Suited) 88 (Pocket Eights)

For hands outside this list, factor in your position and the situation at the table before deciding.

Live Dealer vs Digital Poker

Both versions are available at baji — which one suits you depends on your preference and playing style.

Live Dealer Poker
  • Real dealer and physical cards — a casino feel from home
  • Chat with other players at the table
  • Professional studio setting and HD streaming
  • Dealing pace is relatively slower — more time to think
  • Table limits are generally a bit higher
Digital (RNG) Poker
  • Fast gameplay — more hands per hour
  • Option to sit at multiple tables at the same time
  • Lower table limits — good for getting started
  • Pause at any time
  • Software ensures every card deal is completely random

Table limits and betting structure

Poker tables at baji are arranged across various betting ranges so that both new and experienced players can pick a table that suits them.

Low-stakes tables have much smaller blinds — giving you a chance to practise without putting heavy pressure on your bankroll. Mid-stakes tables are a bit more competitive and the pots can grow larger. High-stakes tables are for experienced players, where a single hand can move a significant amount of money.

There are three different structures: limit poker, pot-limit and no-limit. No-Limit Hold'em is the most popular because you can go all-in at any point. In pot-limit, the maximum raise equals the size of the pot — this structure is more commonly used in Omaha poker.

Poker FAQ

In Texas Hold'em, each player receives two hole cards and can use any number of the five community cards to make a hand — even all five. In Omaha, each player receives four hole cards, but must use exactly two hole cards and exactly three community cards to make a hand — this rule changes both the hand possibilities and the strategy. Omaha tends to produce more dramatic hands because players have more hole cards.

The player sitting directly to the left of the dealer button posts the small blind, and the player next to them posts the big blind. The big blind is usually double the small blind. These mandatory bets set the initial size of the pot for each hand. The dealer button moves clockwise after each hand, so every player takes a turn posting the blinds.

Position refers to the order in which you act. Being in late position — on or near the button — means you act last, after seeing what everyone else has done. That information is valuable. In early position you have less information, so playing weak hands becomes risky. Many experienced players say that a weak hand in late position can still lead to good decisions, while even a strong hand in early position can cause problems.

In Three-Card Poker, the dealer qualifies with a Queen-high hand or better. If the dealer does not qualify, your ante bet pays even money and the play bet pushes. If the dealer qualifies and your hand wins, both the ante and play bets pay even money. The "Pair Plus" side bet is independent of the dealer's hand — it pays out as long as your hand contains a pair or better.

The poker table interface on baji's mobile platform is optimised for touchscreens. Cards, chips and action buttons are large and clear. Live dealer streaming works normally on mobile. You can play directly in the browser on both Android and iOS devices, or through the baji app available via the official channel.

Missing the flop means the community cards have not formed any strong combination with your hole cards. The general advice in this situation: check or fold if you are in early position. If your hand has a draw — such as a flush draw or straight draw — consider pot odds before deciding. A continuation bet can work in late position against a weak board, but avoid the habit of bluffing at random.
